Bedre foder resulterer i bedre mad til os alle
Hos BioMar forstår vi, at rejsen til enestående fisk og rejer begynder længe før, den når bordet, og den starter med det foder, der giver næring til fisk og rejer.
Poultry meal is emerging as a valuable ingredient in aquafeed formulations, offering a circular protein and mineral source that supports the growth and development of farmed fish. Rich in essential amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals, poultry meal is highly palatable and plays a crucial role in maintaining fish health and productivity.
Poultry meal is a high-protein ingredient packed with key amino acids, fatty acids, and micronutrients, all of which are necessary for building muscle, supporting metabolic functions, and enhancing the immune system of farmed fish. The high palatability of poultry meal ensures that fish accept it easily in their diets, further boosting feed efficiency.
As a by-product of the chicken processing industry, poultry meal is particularly valuable as it makes use of leftovers that might otherwise be removed from the food system. These by-products are processed into a concentrated powder, which is then included in aquafeed formulations.
Circular & restorative
One of the most significant advantages of poultry meal is its role in the circular economy. As a by-product of the meat industry, it helps reduce waste and allows for more efficient use of resources. By substituting primary ingredients that compete with food production — such as crops from arable land or whole fish marine ingredients — poultry meal provides a more sustainable alternative. This circular approach helps lower the demand for primary animal proteins and reduces the environmental pressures associated with traditional food production.
Low Carbon Footprint
Poultry meal is considered a low-carbon footprint raw material, contributing to improving the overall impact of aquaculture. The carbon intensity of poultry meal may vary slightly depending on factors such as the composition of the chicken feed and the efficiency of poultry production practices. However, in comparison to other protein sources, poultry meal is a relatively environmentally friendly option. Its circularity, which makes use of agricultural and food processing by-products, helps minimize the overall environmental impact of aquafeed.
Reducing Forage Fish Dependency Ratio (FFDR)
One of the major benefits of incorporating poultry meal into aquafeed is its ability to reduce the FFDR. By substituting for fish meal, poultry meal helps decrease the need for marine ingredients in fish feed, contributing to more sustainable feed formulations. This reduction in reliance on fish meal aligns with the broader goal of making aquaculture more sustainable and less dependent on primary marine proteins.

Guar, or Cyamopsis tetragonoloba, might not sound glamorous, but it powers a surprising range of industries. From your pantry to petroleum, and even into fish feed, this underappreciated crop is quietly shaping the world around us.

At the BioMar factory in Denmark, we assist salmon and trout farmers with tailored solutions, backed by our technical expert team, BioFarm. These advisors are dedicated to sharing knowledge on pigmentation strategies, helping our partners achieve top-quality fish fillets.
Slagteklare laks blev analyseret for at bestemme den spiselige del. Resultatet viste, at hele 74 procent af laksen bestod af rent fiskekød.
Their aquaculture journey began with curiosity sparked by an unused pond on his father’s land. With no prior experience in fish farming but a strong background in finance and business, Lauris Apsis saw an opportunity to create something meaningful. Recognizing sustainability as the key to long-term success, Lauris and his Finnish partner, Salmela-Yhtiot Oy founded Blue Circle (Zivs uz Ledus), a Latvian farm dedicated to producing premium Arctic char using cutting-edge recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS).
As the global demand for sustainable aquaculture practices continues to rise, so does the need for alternatives to traditional fish meal and fish oil. One of the most promising innovations in this space is AlgaPrime, a revolutionary ingredient that provides a sustainable and nutritious source of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly DHA.
As the aquaculture industry expands, one of the key challenges is finding sustainable and nutritious alternatives to traditional ingredients like fishmeal and fish oil, which have been the cornerstone of aquafeeds historically. One promising alternative that is gaining attention in aqua-faced formulation are horse beans.
Fish oil from trimmings is a success story in the world of sustainable resources — turning what was once discarded into something both practical and powerful. Derived from the parts of fish not used for human consumption such as heads, skin, bones, tails, and viscera — this by-product is now a valuable ingredient in everything from aquaculture to agriculture, pet food, and even renewable energy.
Fish oil is a crucial ingredient in aquafeed formulations, valued for its unique nutritional composition, particularly its high levels of essential omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA). These fatty acids are vital for the optimal growth, development, and overall well-being of farmed fish. Fish oil not only enhances feed conversion efficiency but also plays a significant role in supporting immune function, reproductive health, and the development of larvae and eggs in broodstock.
